Antispyware ProgramsWhat is Spyware?Spyware is a program that gathers your personal information or monitors your computer activity. Everyone that accesses the internet is at risk, however downloading freeware such as music and game programs or visiting warez sites makes you more prone to having spyware unknowingly installed in your computer. Spyware has the capability to penetrate, record and send off your personal information kept and keyed into your computer. This personal information can include your name and surname, address, telephone number, email addresses, passwords, credit card numbers and social security numbers. The information gathered by spyware is most often sold to companies who will then use it for advertising purposes. These companies can then target you with product ads they feel you would purchase based on the information gathered by the spyware processes running in your PC. Some spyware can change the home page of your browser or open multiple pop-up windows in your browser. The programs that open the pop-up windows are typically known as adware. Most spyware programs run silently on your computer, leaving you no signs of the information being transferred out. Eventually and almost certainly spyware will decrease the performance of your computer. Therefore having an antispyware program installed on your computer is definitely a necessity if you have access to the internet. Spyware RemoversSince a spyware program is not a computer virus, most spyware programs cannot be removed by most antivirus programs. However some programs like McAffee VirusScan, Kaspersky Antivirus, Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus are capable of detecting and removing both viruses and spyware. Removing spyware usually requires running a process that goes through the files and registry entries and checks for all known spyware programs. In certain cases, as happened to me in the past, the antispyware program might be unable to remove one or more spyware programs. In that case you might need to remove the spyware manually by deleting the spyware files and the registry entries that belong to the spyware. In certain cases you might also need to boot into safe mode to remove the spyware. Manually removing spyware is usually only recommended as a last resort as deleting the wrong files or the wrong registries might make your operating system and program unoperable. Moreover given the fact that there are thousands and thousands of spyware programs running on the net, removing spyware manually is very time consuming. Running one or more spyware removers at least every few days is recommended to guard against spyware infections. Since new spyware comes out every day it is also very important to keep the spyware remover programs updated. After each spyware scan you usually need to instruct the spyware program to erase the spyware files, to quarantine them or to leave them where they are. Antispyware programs are available as both free antispyware programs and paid antispyware programs. Paid anispyware programs usually act as spyware blockers (see next section) so they are more effective then free spyware removers. Spyware BlockersSpyware blockers are usually spyware removers with the added feature that they blocks attempts to install spyware in real time. Spyware blockers check incoming network data and disk files during actual downloads. Whenever a known spyware is encounterd it is immediately blocked by the spyware blocker before or during the download process and before the spyware does any damage. Some spyware blockers also block attempts to modify the browser settings and attempts to install start-up items. Contrast this to a spyware remover program that removes spyware only after it has been installed on your PC. Since prevention is better than cure, a spyware blocker is more effective than a spyware remover. And if you have confidential information on your PC it is always recommended to invest in a spyware blocker.
Free Spyware Removers:There are several good free spyware removal programs. I suggest trying out a few and choosing what you like best. Spyware Doctor 5.0 for Windows Spyware Doctor is another top antispyware program. PC Tools Software which is the company that develops Spyware Doctor claims that Spyware Doctor has been downloaded over 125 million times which is no mean feat. Spyware Doctor runs as a background program to blocks malicious spyware in real time. It can also scan and remove all the spyware that was already lying in your PC. Truth to be told there is little to choose between this product and Spy Sweeper as both programs come pretty close to being perfect antispyware programs.
Another excellent antispyware program is AVG Anti-Spyware. Although not be as popular as the above antispyware programs, AVG Anti-Spyware still provides complete protection against spware and other malicious threats. AVG Anti-Spyware runs a resident shield with on-access scanning that protects your PC from being infected by spyware at all times.
